Abstract
Chronic paranasal sinusitis is a disease which is important clinically and frequently encountered in the field of otorhinolaryngoiogy, and its treatment, however, is extremely difficult.
Although marked progress has been achieved in the surgical approach, appreciable progress has also been recently achieved in enzymotherapy as a conservative treatment and a number of agents have been developed.
Danzen is a new preparation of protease, serratio-peptidase, produced by a new strain E of the genus Serratia and developed by the Research Laboratories of the Takeda Chemical Industries in Japan. It is more potent in anti-inflammatory activity and anti-tumefacient effect than heretofore available anti-inflammatory enzymes and has less side effect.
We obtained the clinical experience of Danzen administered orally to 30 cases of acute and chronic sinusitis.
The results are as follows ;
1) Danzen was effective in 63% of the cases treated and was found to be consider-ably effective in all of the cases of acute sinusitis and acutely exacerbated chronic sinusitis when used in combination with antibiotics.
2) For the conservative treatment of chronic sinusitis, the patient should be selected carefully.
3) No side effects were encountered with Danzen in the patients employed in the present study.
